Overview
ProAccess are a group dedicated to empowering and supporting children who have special educational needs overcome the barriers they face with the transition from year 6 to year 7.
We plan to do this by providing engaging and interactive workshops that develop strategies to facilitate a successful transition from primary to secondary school, topics include emotional intelligence/self awareness and communication.
ProAccess aims to also support their parents by providing information needed to ease their own anxiety experienced while their children transition.
Our objective is to improve the prospect of thriving throughout secondary school for children with SEN, both socially and academically.
Aims and Objectives
We recognised that young people with SEN are not given the support in the transition from year 6 to year 7. This is a fundamental transition in their environment and social circles that has a tremendous impact on their journey.
We aim to hold our sessions through the youth centres in the Lewisham area, where there is a high level of deprivation. From research it has shown deprivation and SEN go hand in hand. Youth centres already have an established relationship with parents and communities that we aim to work with. The workshops aim to support the parents and children in dealing with anxiety and stress.
The pains of this transition can be large; issues of communication arising from an unfamiliar environment and new people, a decrease in confidence and a feeling of isolation and loneliness.
Through our workshops we hope to tackle these pains by turning them into gains: workshops to discuss healthy relationships and communication, building emotional intelligence and workshops to help participants understand their self-worth.
Along with this, we would also meet the parents of our participants to update on their children’s progress and provide information needed to ease own anxiety had on their child’s transitioning.
